Music
Although the charts have failed to maintain their significance in contemporary British life,
music interest has not waned in the slightest. It's hard to sum up such a vast field in a few sentences, but perhaps the most important contributions in Britain to music, have been: diversity and defying boundaries or conventions. Either creating new genres, or extending the reach of existing ones.
Punk is the obvious name-check, but it goes much deeper than that, from Merseybeat, Mod, Prog. Rock, Heavy Metal, New Romantic, Reggae, Ska, Indie, House, Hip Hop, Rave, Garage, Northern Soul, Electronica and beyond - diversity is key. There are plenty of places to see musical performances, thousands of radio stations and millions of people creating music. It's a thriving industry here. HMV is the major retailer.
