DVDs - are region 2, as are the players. Disks from other regions won't work on equipment here. 
Likewise disks sold here might not work in your home country.
Foreign language films are shown in cinemas with subtitles. Granted, it's more work to read along, but the original 'oevre' of the film is preserved. Dubbing with its comical accents and diluted acting, is widely shunned.
(Many DVD players have a software hack to enable them to play multi-region, though you didn't hear it from me).
