Chatting Up
Hitting on, flirting and all that palaver is the same in London as it is anywhere else. Lines don't work, unless you're being ironic.
In fact I'm glad I mentioned it, as being ironic is another significant part of British humour - right up there with sarcasm. If you're not doing well in your 'chat-up' technique, you can expect gentle teasing at your expense.
Conversation is key here, have something to say rather than well-trodden compliments. Being funny is your next best-friend and try to keep a handle on the sarcasm and irony. Self-deprecating humour is a high-wire act. The line between self-mocking jinx and self-sympathetic misery, is gossamer-thin. Can you laugh a woman into bed in the UK. Yes, you can - but expect to sing for your supper.
