Home London Visitor Advice Chatting Up

Chatting Up

Hitting on, flirting and all that palaver is the same in London as it is anywhere else. Lines don't work, unless you're being ironic. Don't expect that flattery will get you all the way. It's got some cachet, but can get old fast. Think original thoughts and make them funny. Bing, bing bing! Winning combination. In fact I'm glad I mentioned it, as being ironic is another significant part of British humour - right up there with sarcasm. If you're not doing well in your 'chat-up' technique, you can expect gentle teasing at your expense.

Conversation is key here, have something to say rather than well-trodden compliments. Being funny is your next best-friend and try to keep a handle on the sarcasm and irony. Self-deprecating humour is a high-wire act. The line between self-mocking jinx and self-sympathetic misery, is gossamer-thin. Can you laugh a woman into bed in the UK. Yes, you can - but expect to sing for your supper.
