Tower Bridge - Tower of London - Monument
Tower Bridge, The Tower of London and The Monument are perhaps best served by the river, which has a comprehensive transport service. Take a river bus to Tower Millennium Pier from
other central London locations such as: Chelsea, Westminster, Embankment and Festival Hall, there are piers extending from Putney in the west to Woolwich in the east. A range of tickets are available, with a Roamer being a better option here, as you can get on an off between the locations.
Tower Bridge is an interesting bridge to simply walk around or across, and if you're lucky you'll see it raised to allow traffic to pass underneath. There is however an exhibition centre, (with minimal queuing) allowing you to see how Tower Bridge operates, historical exhibitions and to gain access to the high-level walkways between the towers, giving one of the best views in the city.
Nearby is the Tower of London, whose entrance is to the west side of the site - home of the Yeoman Warders, ravens and Crown Jewels. The White Tower in the centre was built at the end of the eleventh century, shortly after the Battle of Hastings, when the Normans invaded the British Isles. It was the last time the islands were conquered by an outside force - the royal 'House of Normandy'.
Although prior kingdoms existed for centuries before this invasion - all succession of royal houses are traced from 1066 onwards.
It's possible to take a Riverbus west, towards London Bridge, where there is another pier, but the distance is also short enough to walk. Taking the stairs leading up from the river path and heading north into the city, you will pass The Monument on your left. It was built by Wren and Hooke to indicate the origin of the The Great Fire of London in 1666, which caused extensive damage to buildings, but caused little loss to human life.
