Greenwich Market is a covered market in Greenwich, south east London, which specialises in antiques, arts, and crafts.Greenwich market is in the heart of the World Heritage Site of Maritime Greenwich.There has been a market at Greenwich since the 14th century, but the history of the present market dates from 1700 when a charter to run two markets, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, was assigned by Lord Romney to the Commissioners of Greenwich Hospital for 1000 years.

Greenwich Market is located in Greenwich town centre within an area called the Island Site, which is bounded by College Approach, Greenwich Church Street, King William Walk and Nelson Road. The Island site forms part of the World Heritage Site, which also includes the National Maritime Museum, Old Royal Naval College, the Queens House and the Royal Observatory.



Today, Greenwich Market trades five days a week but the shops, cafes, bars, pubs and restaurants around the Market are open seven days a week, including Greenwich Printmakers, the oldest-established printmaking co-operative in the UK.

Wednesday is a food and homeware market day, Thursdays and Fridays specialise in antiques and collectables and arts and crafts. Weekends and bank holidays attract arts & crafts and food stalls.There are a wide selection of specialist shops, bars, restaurants and a café, all open seven days a week.
Located at the centre of the one way system, the market has four entrances leading in from each of the surrounding streets.

By TrainRiverboats: travel from central London to Greenwich in the east and Hampton Court in the west.
Greenwich Station from London: Charing Cross, Waterloo East, London Bridge and Cannon Street. Journey time approximately 20 minutes. A Travelcard Zone 1 — 2 is valid. (www.rail.co.uk)

By Tube
•    Docklands Light Railway direct to Cutty Sark Gardens
•    Jubilee Line to Canary Wharf, change to DLR
Cutty Sark Gardens is a twenty-minute journey from Bank and Tower Gateway Stations and only ten minutes from Canary Wharf, where you change from the Line to the DLR using the covered walkway to Heron Quays Station. Lewisham Stratford are major gateways for those coming from Kent and Essex respectively. (www.dlr.co.uk)

•    To Greenwich town centre: 177, 180, 188, 286, 386
•    To Greenwich Park (Blackheath): 53, X53.
•    The 188 bus from Russell Square comes through the town centre on its way to North Greenwich Underground station.
Greenwich town centre is also served by the 177 (Thamesmead to Peckham), 180 (Belvedere to Lewisham), 199 (Canada Water to Catford), 286 (Greenwich to Sidcup via Eltham) and 386 (Greenwich to Woolwich). The 53 (Oxford Circus to Plumstead) passes the Blackheath Gate entrance to Greenwich Park, but does not come through the town itself.

Queen Elizabeth I was able to travel to Greenwich in under an hour from Whitehall with a boat of strong rowers and a favourable tide. Today you can cruise from Westminster, Waterloo, Embankment and Tower Piers in approximately the same time and see some of London’s finest buildings from the river. If you have a Travelcard you can get a 33% discount. You could combine the boat trip with a faster return journey by Docklands Light Railway to Bank, Canary Wharf, Tower Gateway, Stratford, Lewisham or by rail to Charing Cross.
