SACRED InTRANSIT

Saturday 30 July, 2011

The celebrated SACRED season at Chelsea Theatre is moving…

This summer for one day only, SACRED joins forces with the Arts Service of Kensington & Chelsea Lost & Found - orienteering around the streets of Chelsea and World's End via mobile instruction - free to participateto present SACRED InTRANSIT – An action-packed extravaganza of walking and movement; all but one event completely free of charge.

Chelsea Theatre Artistic Director Francis Alexander says: “With this action-packed day of work from walking artists, SACRED moves into new territory. We explore one of the most basic of human needs – getting from A to B. Maybe in the process we uncover some truths about how our minds and bodies respond to the changing world around us.”

Best known for presenting and supporting artists who challenge traditional boundaries of performance, Chelsea Theatre’s previous SACRED seasons have been an ongoing success, attracting international artists and building a strong audiences. Now with its 5th anniversary fast approaching, SACRED makes a brief but dynamic summer appearance, prompting yet another irrepressible cavalcade of events and artists to experience and savour on Saturday 30th July, 2011. SACRED is also due to return to Chelsea Theatre this November for its annual season showcasing an exciting international collaboration, details to be announced.

SACRED InTRANSIT invites adventurous audiences to take part in a specially curated walk, led by an international artist duo around the comparatively unknown streets of Worlds End and Chelsea Wharf as well as the historic Kings Road. Consider walking as an art form in a one-day symposium and whirl the afternoon away with an authentic Latin tea dance. Enjoy a photography workshop with a prestigious international photographer…

Lost and Found
Amy Sharrocks
Like an air traffic controller with no GPS, Amy Sharrocks will guide walkers around different areas of Chelsea via their mobile phone. Lost & Found offers a kind of urban drift, orchestrated by chance, where you may not get to follow your chosen path. How can we stay ‘in touch’ with someone when they go away and what kind of impoverishment or enrichment is involved? The intimacy of a voice in your ear is contrasted with a continued absence.

Multifaceted artist Amy Sharrocks has a well documented body of work including SWIM, when 50 people swam, ran and bussed their way across London via 15 lakes, lidos and swimming pools. London Is A River City, a series of large public walks along the lost rivers of London and WALBROOK which involved 65 people tied together.
