Les Deux Mondes and Unity Theatre present:
Gold Mountain
Wednesday 25 to Saturday 28 April 7.30pm, Sunday 29 April 6pm. Saturday matinee 3pm
A rich combination of storytelling and visual wizardry join forces in Les Deux Monde and Unity Theatre's intimate, yet epic Gold Mountain
at the Albany, 25 to 29 April; as part of an international tour.
Following a successful debut at Liverpool's Unity Theatre, Gold Mountain is a highly personal hour- long piece, weaving drama, imagery, film and soundscapes into a complex, inventive and emotional tale.
Gold Mountain tells the story of David Yee, a contemporary Liverpudlian of Chinese descent who is trying to piece together the broken jigsaw of his father's life. From a small village in China to war-torn Liverpool via the horrors of Atlantic convoys, audiences are invited to follow Yee Lui's journey and experiences of migration, friendship, addiction and adversity.
Based on memories of his late father, Gold Mountain is written and performed by David Yip:
"I have always been conscious of my cultural heritage, not just one but two. Being the son of a Chinese seaman from Canton and a mother from Liverpool, it hasn't always been easy to marry the two. I spent three months recording talks with my father.
It was sad and shocking in places and I realised very quickly that I would not be able to write about any of it, certainly not while he was alive. So it remained hidden away for the next twenty years.
Les Deux Mondes came to Liverpool to work with us at the Unity Theatre and we explored the use of screens, images, film, soundscapes and music along with the written word, it was exhilarating. Now nearly 4 years later, a great number of performances around the world, we have a completed show touring with these exceptional performing artists."
