A short walk from the Tate Modern on Bankside is The Table which in addition to serving an impressive breakfast, is also open for lunch and dinner. This The Table in Southwark is a country mile away from traditional greasy spoons, but serves satisfying breaksfasts on a parhas been an incremental process as the restaurant originally served breakfast only and then the choice was limited (if you didn't like bacon sandwiches). Organic growth and word of mouth have enabled it to gain a reputation over the last 5 years.

If you're imagining a greasy spoon, which I admit to when I first heard about The Table - think again. It's the kind of place Kevin McCloud would be eulogising about as he contemplated architecturally clean lines and ambient light sources. It's smart, chic and canteen style, but not too tightly packed. You are permitted to linger and breakfast at The Table is the kind of treat you can afford fairly regularly.

It still offers a range of sarnies - bacon, sausage and egg, plus some highbrow dishes such as 'Eggs Royale' (reminds me of 'Pulp Fiction' - "it's the little differences..."). Two poached eggs, lounging on a bed of Derreensillagh oak smoked salmon, atop a toasted muffin and cloaked in an unctuous hollandaise. You get the picture, but that's my florid prose, not theirs. The eggs, bread, porridge and many other items are organic and there's care and attention to detail which you'll notice without marketing spiel having to direct you towards it. Service is good and there's a decent turnaround as people drift in and out, though obviously it gets busy at the weekend.

If you fancy dinner, the canteen service is replaced by traditional table service, the house-lights go down and things get more intimate. The produce is mostly sourced from Borough Market, a short distance away and they do like to test new ideas and menu items out continually. If you're in the area, give it a try and if you're coming up to town to visit the Tate Modern, Globe or Borough Market. Leave a bit earlier and give breakfast at The Table a whirl.
