Home Unique Bars & Pubs Hidden London Bars

Green & Blue - East Dulwich

A bar with a shop next door so you can carry some take-out away with you. An independent retail store that has Green And Blue: a bar with a shop that hosts tasting events and social evenings.plans to expand to a small group (their second bar recently opened in Clapham), the emphasis is on stocking a manageable list (150 or so wines) all sourced from growers and arranged by style. Add to this, some imaginative, well-executed food and the buzz-atmosphere of Lordship Lane in East Dulwich and you have several sound reasons to come out of your way for a visit. Food is Tapas style and the wines cover every region, with the emphasis on 'being good' rather than name and reputation.

Cellar Gascon - Smithfield

As much here for the food as the wine, this is the next-door and sister operation to the Michelin starred Club Gascon. Cellar Gascon: another gem tucked away in the hinterlands of Smithfield Market. The food is nibbley to go with the wine, but of a different class to that usually on offer. Potted duck and goose rillettes, duck carpaccio remoulade, wild mushroom and duck Gascony pie, to help the mostly French selections of wines ease down . There's also a 5 course food/wine taster menu, which is reasonably priced, so if you're looking for wine enthusiasts with stylish gastronomy in a comfortable enviroment, then look no further.

(Weekdays only)

Gordon's Wine Bar - Charing Cross

(1 vote, average 5.00 out of 5)
Busy, busy, busy. Particularly during the summer months when the area of Charing Cross is awash with language students spilling out from the nearby concentration of schools. It's on the main link between the Strand and Embankment and consequently is one of the busiest streets in the city. Gordon's Wine Bar: another oasis in a desert of tacky tourism.Inside you'll find an extensive selection of reasonably priced wines and some delicious morsels to complement what you're drinking. It's hardly in a secret location, but there's something austere about that exterior that puts many off and traditional pub drinkers will likely give it a swerve. Try it during the week, post commuter rush and you'll be rewarded for your trouble. There's an outside terrace in the warmer months, where you may be treated to music wafting over from the nearby bandstand.

Tiroler Hut - Bayswater

(1 vote, average 5.00 out of 5)

Tiroler Hut is a bit of one-off and may just be what you're looking for if you absolutely have to pull off a rowdy night out. Tiroler Hut: for when you absolutely have to have a knee-slapping Austrian night out.More restaurant than bar, it fits better in the 'Hidden Gems' section of the site (so you need to book). Unusually for London it offers an Austrian dining experience (no, me neither), complete with authentic food including bratwurst, wienerschitzel, jägerschnitzel and sauerkraut. All washed back with out-size steins of lager.

The staff at the Tiroler Hut dress traditionally and expect knee-slapping, raucous singing, lederhosen, cow bells and an accordian to feature at some point during the evening. Not the place for shrinking violets to pass a quiet evening, but lots of fun and memorable to boot.

Oliver’s Jazz & Piano Bar - Greenwich

Small, very tucked away in the universally popular location of Greenwich is this jazz club and late night bar. Oliver's Jazz Bar: small and intimate venue which can get very warm during the summer. There is an entrance fee, but the quality of the live music is of the highest order. You do have the option of drink only, but you'd be cutting off your nose to spite your face. Better to give the music a try, as coupled with such an enthusiastic venue you may acquire a long-term taste for it. Yes it is small and hot, but better to consider it intimate and warm.
