Cross Keys - Covent Garden
The Cross Keys can be very busy during the summer months as its exterior is an explosion of blooms and can't fail to attract attention. If London's streets were streams, then Endell Street is the kind which lazy pike would sun themselves in - slowly opening and closing their mouths as the world hurries past. There's
a civility down this road, that's missing a few hundred yards further up in the Piazza. The nearby cafe is the kind that will still have a chat with you when you walk in unannounced and the chippy on the corner is London's oldest and one of the best - Rock & Sole Plaice.
Over the road is the Hospital Club where they film 'Strictly Take 2', so if you're a minor-celeb botherer there's a decent chance you'll catch Winkleman breezing in and out. Another one of those pubs that makes a pleasant bolt-hole in the thick of West End congestion. Friendly service and a lack of push and shove, which is so common in the busiest parts of town, means it has a regular clientele, but is also friendly to first time visitors.
It's actually best in the Winter when huddling together is a more attractive proposition. Saturday evening is not the best time as space is tight, but the afternoon and outside after-work peaks, it's a civilised place to kill a couple of hours.
