Princess Louise – Holborn
Built in 1872 and named after one of Queen Victoria's daughters, the Princess Louise reopened recently after major refurbishment.
Although from the street, it's easy to walk by and not be drawn in, it does however, warrant closer inspection.
The wood and glass interiors are the work of artisans and craftsmen - even the toilets are something to admire.
Good [cheap] ales and very reasonably priced hot food make this a popular pub with local residents and workers. If you're looking for a seat and can spare the time, visit outside the lunchtime and early evening crush.
They serve their own range of beer, some of it very cheap , but the plain exterior thankfully doesn't draw in the tourist crowds. At night with the lights blazing and reflecting off the hundreds of etched panes, mirrors and glass shades, it can feel like you're sitting inside a giant Swarovski ball - which isn't a bad way to feel at all. It also retains an air of mystery since you can hear what's happening in the entire pub, but can only see the comings and goings in your modest section. A glimpse into how they used to run pubs in the old days, along stricter class lines.
A few doors down from Holborn Tube station (cross over the Kingway and head past the Sainsbury's on the corner) - if you can get there outside peak
hours, then enjoy the exclusivity. If it's rammed, then enjoy the comings and goings. A lot of people stop here for a few and move on - making it part of their evening circuit (crawl).
