Although train tickets can be bought at a discount over the Internet (in advance), many British users still find the system unwieldy. 
Generally, all mainline stations in London have a large ticketing area, where you buy your tickets before starting your journey. There will be a queue of some kind, so leave more than a minute or two.
There are two classes – First and well… ‘Not First’ – it might be called standard, economy, premium, saver, or any number of titles. State you destination and whether you want a single or return. Returns mean they will need to know when you’re coming back, as they have a limited use period.
The departures are listed on the electronic boards outside. The platform is only given in the last ten minutes or so.
