Airplane and Airport Services

There are two main airport hubs serving London, and several smaller airports:

Jet landing at Heathrow airport in West London.

Heathrow

Billed as the world’s busiest airport with 67 million passengers per year, travelling from five terminals.  It’s the busiest for international rather than domestic passengers – for the fact quibblers and has excellent transport links into London.

Rail

Heathrow Express (and Heathrow Connect which stops en-route) travel to Paddington Station from Terminals 1,2,3 & 5. Quick, efficient, but expensive.

Underground/Tube

Piccadilly Line – it circles the airport then heads back into town. Good if you have less baggage. Lots of stops, but most of it’s above ground so you can see where you’re going. Cheaper and frequent.

Coach

Takes you to Victoria Coach station – thrifty, but slower since you’re negotiating traffic.

Car

There are numerous car rental agencies at the airport that can provide more information. Renting a car in London is not the best strategy since parking is limited and expensive and a congestion charge operates daily throughout the central zone.

Taxi

It’s about 15-20 miles into town from the airport so the taxi will be an expense, but it does take you door-to-door which is welcome when laden with heavy baggage. Also if several of you are splitting the cost, it can work out cheaper than the train.

Gatwick

A smaller hub, but still very busy (the 9th busiest in the world for international travellers). It's also further away with cheaper connections. Lots of users prefer it, and the train service is fast and efficient.

Heathrow Express: a purpose built fast rail service into the city.

Use the Gatwick Express to travel to Victoria Station. National Express coaches pull into Victoria Coach Station.

Stansted Airport

The Stansted Express connects by rail to Liverpool Street Station. National Express coaches link to Victoria and Easibus and Terravision link to stops in central London.

City Airport

Connects via the DLR (Docklands Light Railway). It uses small aircraft, because of it’s steep glide path and short runway. It mainly services short-haul European destinations.
